Tripura violence: Four injured, 15 bikes and automotive gutted in CPM-BJP conflict forward of panchayat polls; residents desert village


Agartala: West Chandrapur village close to the India-Bangladesh border in North Tripura district on Monday became a abandoned rural hamlet as all of the villagers shifted to elsewhere after a conflict broke out between BJP and CPM supporters, police stated.

No one has been arrested or detained within the incident to date however police and paramilitary forces have been deployed within the village, stated Milan Dutta, officer-in-charge of Dharmanagar police station.

“We went to the area for investigation, but not a single person was found in the village. They fled from the village immediately after the clash,” Dutta instructed reporters.

He stated residents may need taken shelter in neighbouring villages.

The BJP Monday filed an FIR towards 21 folks for allegedly attacking their activists and supporters, once they had gone there on Sunday for marketing campaign for the upcoming rural polls.

Panchayat elections within the state could be held on 27 July for which submitting of nominations started from 1 July.

The saffron celebration blamed the CPM for the conflict, whereas the Left celebration termed the allegations as “baseless”.

Deputy Speaker of Tripura Assembly Biswabandhu Sen alleged that the BJP staff had been attacked by the CPM staff throughout campaigning for the agricultural polls.

He had claimed that 4 of his celebration supporters had been severely injured and shifted to Assam’s Silchar, about 150 kilometres from Dharmanagar, for remedy.

Alleging that the BJP supporters had been exerting stress on CPI(M) activists to withdraw nominations, the Left Front convener Bijan Dhar stated the saffron celebration activists had attacked its celebration workplace and supporters on Sunday.
