Social network giant Facebook has been working with oculus, its augmented reality unit for two years. Facebook is creating a new app to bring augment reality to the real world. Augmented reality (AR) is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data.
Facebook CEO Mark zuckerburg at the F8 event said that “Facebook is making the camera first augmented reality platform. Augmented reality is going to mix the digital and physical in new ways”. The AR tools not only increase the functionality of the camera, it also display directions and add digital objects.
Facebook says that this technology is the next step in changing the way we interact with computers. Users will be able to overlay images from a computer onto their surroundings so that they can watch television on blank walls or lay out furniture in an empty room.
The highlighted features of the AR platform on Facebook include object recognition, 3D effects and exact location. However, Zuckerburg also mentioned that the new AR tools will not magically transform users’ experience. Microsoft also thinking about the augmented reality.
