Harry Potter: Jason Isaacs Wanted to Play Gilderoy Lockhart

Published

on

Kenneth Branagh would up playing Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, but according to Jason Isaacs, he could have seen things going another way. In fact, Isaacs wanted to portray Lockhart himself, rather than the character he ended up playing, Lucius Malfoy. Needless to say, Isaacs wasn’t too happy that the role of Lockhart went to Branagh rather than himself.

Isaacs didn’t originally auditioned for the role of Lucius Malfoy. Instead, he auditioned for the role of Lockhart, but came in second to Branagh. Isaacs was especially annoyed when producers and casting directors asked him to read for the role of Lucius Malfoy thereafter. It got to the point that he even told his agent to tell the Harry Potter team “no” if they asked him to take on the role.

According to Digital Spy, Isaacs didn’t want to portray two villains in children’s films back to back – as at the time, he was already set to play Captain Hook in the 2003 film, Peter Pan. It wasn’t until his entire family started pestering him to take on the role of Lucius Malfoy, letting him know how special of an opportunity it was, that he thought it over. While Isaacs ultimately decided to take the role, he was still jealous of Branagh landing the role of Lockhart.

When recalling the time that he almost gave up the role of the lifetime, Isaacs said that he “was mightily pissed off when they asked me would I mind reading for a different part.” Just as well, his entire family begged him to take the role, not because they wanted to see him in the film, but because they wanted to have the opportunity to visit the Harry Potter set and see things behind the scenes. Their persuasion led to Isaacs taking on the role. After the fact, Isaacs was happy to have done it, saying: “I took the job and thank god I did!”

The Harry Potter series would have been rather different without Isaacs playing Draco Malfoy‘s father. He was the head of the Malfoy household and he nailed it when it came to portraying a dark and villainous character. While he probably would have done great as Gildory Lockhart, Branagh was the better pick for the role. While it might not have started out in the best way, it sure ended great and that’s all that matters.

With all that being said, it might have been pretty amusing to see Isaacs in the role of Lockhart. He and Branagh aren’t that far apart as actors, all things considered.

15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other

Published

on

It’s sometimes easy to forget that acting involves a great deal of…well, acting. You know, making up emotions, characters, and motivations in order to tell a story. It’s easy to forget that because there are so many talented actors in the world who make you truly believe their performances.

For example, even though you may know that two stars are dating equally famous people who aren’t the person they’re making eyes at on-screen, it’s easy enough to convince yourself that they might actually love each other. While that’s sometimes the case, it’s far more common to find on-screen couples who simply enjoy each other’s company.

And other times, the loving couple you’re staring at on-screen quite simply can’t stand each other’s company when the cameras are off. There are many reasons why that is the case, but the most common source of friction is the same reason that keeps some people from being able to stand other people. There are just times when the personalities of two actors couldn’t be further apart.

Despite it all, they still managed to share that on-screen kiss. Mind you, they may have been silently screaming into each other’s mouths during said scenes.

These are 15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other.

15. Harrison Ford and Sean Young – Blade Runner

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–> 15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other

The more you look into the making of the original Blade Runner, you more you get the impression that everyone nobody had a good time making the movie.

That’s especially true of Harrison Ford, whose creative differences with director Ridley Scott led to Ford turning in a pretty wooden performance. However, Ford still had plenty of animosity left over for co-star Sean Young. Ford and Young were supposed to be a couple in the throes of a passionate love, but their off-screen hatred of each other resulted in their love scene infamously being referred to by the crew as the “hate scene.”

The funny thing is that nobody is quite sure what started their beef outside of the usual conflicting personalities. What we do know is that they had to be separated whenever possible.

14. Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie – The Tourist

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>Depp and Jolie 15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other

We can’t blame you for skipping over 2010’s The Tourist given that the movie wasn’t really entertaining to watch, but those who did so missed out on Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie trying their best not to reveal how much they hate each other.

The two reportedly got along well enough at first, but problems soon emerged. Jolie felt that Depp was out-of-shape, wasn’t serious enough about his work, and would often show up late. Depp thought that Jolie was a bit of a control freak and liked to get her way whenever possible.

Despite their apparent distaste for each other, this underwhelming flick still managed to get multiple Golden Globe nominations – one for Best Musical/Comedy, and a nod for each other of the stars.

13. Mel Gibson and Many Female Co-Stars

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>Mel Gibson 15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other

Without rekindling the whole Mel Gibson public relations fire, let’s just say that recent years haven’t been kind to Gibson’s image. The once revered actor and director is now seen as one of Hollywood’s most controversial figures.

Even before the leaked tapes and racist rants, though, Gibson was a somewhat polarizing person. It has long been reported that he loves to play pranks on-set, particularly against his female co-stars. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but Gibson had a tendency to not let up even when people asked him to.

For instance, he reportedly gave Julia Roberts a freeze-dried rat on the set of Conspiracy Theory as part of some prank we suppose is too complex for us to process. He pulled the same move with Helen Hunt on the set of What Women Want. Oh, and there’s the time he posted nude photos of Renee Russo all over the set of Ransom.

What we’re getting at here is that Gibson is a real charmer.

12. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams – The Notebook

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>Gosling 15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other

Sometimes, hatred is just the foundation of a future relationship.

Consider, for instance, the on-set actions of Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. Anyone who saw The Notebook left the film talking about the amazing on-screen chemistry of these two stars and how their convincing relationship elevated the Nicholas Sparks of it all.

Behind the scenes, Gosling and McAdams did not get along at all. The problems apparently started when Gosling asked director Nick Cassavetes if he’d be willing to replace McAdams because Gosling just wasn’t feeling a connection with her.

After Gosling and McAdams got into a shouting match, they actually started to get along a little more. The belief is that Gosling respected how much Adams stood up for herself. They actually ended up dating for a few years after the film was done.

11. Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey – Dirty Dancing

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>Dirty Dancing 15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other

This one stings a bit.

Dirty Dancing is one of those essential ‘80s movies that feels like it could have only been produced in that particular decade. The heart of the movie was the steamy on-screen relationship between Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey.

Despite their undeniable cinematic chemistry, Grey and Swayze just did not get along. Swayze stated that Grey and he were both heavily invested in the movie, which led to some heightened emotions. Swayze stated that Grey was prone to emotional outbursts which wore his already thin nerves down to their last point.

The whole thing supposedly came to a head when it came time to film some of the final scenes. After numerous reshoots in less than ideal weather conditions, Swayze just did not want to see Grey anymore.

10. Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron – Mad Max: Fury Road

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>Mad Max Fury Road 15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other

While these two weren’t a romantic couple – at least not overtly so – there’s no denying that the relationship between Hardy and Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road was a vital part of the experience. In the midst of all the incredible stunts and visuals was their decidedly human pursuit of hope.

Interestingly, the nature of their on-screen relationship may have been helped by the real-life animosity between the two. Theron suggested as much when she revealed that she and Hardy didn’t get along very well. She also stated that she admits she found the hostility between the two to be quite odd given that she’s never heard anything but good things about Hardy.

All in all, this sounds like another case of two intense actors simply not being able to put aside their own ways on-set.

9. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan – Fifty Shades of Grey

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>Fifty Shades of Grey 15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other

In case you’ve never heard, it seems that nobody wanted to make Fifty Shades of Grey. The actors hated the movie, the directors hated the movie, and everyone involved seemed to hate the general premise.

With all that hate flowing so freely, it probably shouldn’t come as a surprise to learn that the film’s leading couple didn’t exactly see eye to eye. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan apparently had friction between them from the very start. People who worked on the movie reported that they simply couldn’t stand to be around each other.

The details are vague regarding this one, but their animosity likely resulted from the general angst surrounding the production and the somewhat uncomfortable nature of the scenes they filmed. It’s also possible their personalities just didn’t gel.

8. Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen – Knocked Up

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>Knocked Up 15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other

Knocked Up helped signify the glorious box office revival of the comedy genre. Alongside works like The 40-Year-Old-Virgin and Superbad, it provided a somewhat smarter take on comedy that filmgoers were drawn to.

Not everyone was happy with the movie, however. Co-star Katherine Heigl railed against the movie before it even opened via several public forums. Her main beef with the movie was that she allowed herself to play a fundamentally spiteful character, which she perceived to be sexist.

Naturally, this bothered Rogen. Shortly after Heigl made her first comments, Rogen defended the movie and referred to Heigl as a difficult person to work with. That label would actually follow Heigl around for quite some time and has been reported by others.

Eventually, these two managed to somewhat settle their long-standing grudge.

7. Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes – Romeo and Juliet

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>Dicaprio 15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other

The tale of Romeo and Juliet’s love is timeless, but the story of Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes animosity towards each other is at least as old as film itself.

First off, keep in mind that Claire Danes was only 16 when she starred alongside DiCaprio (who was 22 at the time) in Romeo and Juliet. Despite the nature of their age difference, Danes supposedly felt that DiCaprio was the immature one. DiCaprio was known for playing jokes on-set during this time, which reportedly didn’t leave much of an impression on Danes.

The two ultimately were not able to find any middle-ground as DiCaprio felt that Danes needed to lighten up more than she was willing to. Not exactly a tale of star-crossed movie stars, is it?

6. Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn – Four Christmases

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>Four Christmases 15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other

Sometimes, you’re shocked to hear that movie couples don’t like each other given their on-screen chemistry. Other times, you’re shocked to hear that two people didn’t hate each other more given that there were no on-screen sparks between the pair.

This is definitely an example of the latter. Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn seemed to be acting at each other rather than with each other in 2008’s Four Christmases. Here again, we have an instance of two stars with different acting philosophies not finding a way to put aside their differences. Witherspoon was reportedly a very prompt and professional actress while Vaughn was loose and carefree.

Despite what the movies may tell you, those opposites don’t always attract. Instead, Witherspoon and Vaughn simply weathered through the film.

5. Jennifer Aniston and Jay Mohr – Picture Perfect

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>Picture Perfect 15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other

Picture Perfect was a pretty forgettable movie. It was your basic ‘90s rom-com made somewhat famous by the fact that Jennifer Aniston was at the height of her Friends popularity when it was released.

While it seemed natural to pair Aniston and Jay Mohr together given that they were young and popular comedic actors, Aniston didn’t quite see it that way. She didn’t really think that Mohr was a big star and wanted to work with her real-life boyfriend instead.

Wanting such a thing isn’t so bad, but Aniston reportedly voiced her displeasure loudly whenever she was given a chance to do so. Mohr remembers feeling quite helpless during filming as he realized that nothing he could do would make Aniston like him any better.

4. Richard Gere and Debra Winger – An Officer and A Gentleman

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>officer and a gentleman 15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other

Much like Dirty Dancing, there’s a romantic timelessness to An Officer and A Gentleman that helps elevate the movie above its somewhat corny roots. Who will ever forget that scene featuring Richard Gere carrying Debra Winger away from the factory?

Apparently, Gere and Winger would like to forget the whole thing. The reports of their hostility first came from their co-star Louis Gossett Jr., who claimed that Winger felt no affection towards Gere whatsoever and considered him to be a bore. Director Taylor Hackford also stated that Winger was quite wild during those times and made herself hard to get along with.

For what it’s worth, Winger has pretty much stated the same thing. She says that she was very young, extremely independent, and was prone to saying and doing the wrong things.

3. Pierce Brosnan and Teri Hatcher – Tomorrow Never Dies

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>Brosnan 15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other

There are many good reasons to skip Tomorrow Never Dies during your Bond film viewing sessions, but the cold relationship between Pierce Brosnan and Teri Hatcher is certainly near the top of the list.

Granted, the relationships between Bond and the Bond girls is rarely a complex and traditionally romantic – Casino Royale very much aside – but there is usually a certain charm to the sparks that fly between the latest Bond actor and his new love interest.

The lack of said sparks in Tomorrow Never Dies can be attributed to Brosnan’s belief that Hatcher was a diva who constantly delayed shooting with her late arrivals. Later on, we learned that Hatcher’s inconsistent schedule could likely be attributed to her pregnancy and the accompanying effects of her condition.

2. Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman – Kramer vs. Kramer

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>Kramer vs Kramer 15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other

It’s amazing how consistently hostile film sets seem to produce truly great movies. We’re not advocating those hostilities, but rather saying that it’s not uncommon for such things to happen.

Consider, for instance, the feud that engulfed the set of Kramer vs. Kramer. By all accounts, the off-screen relationship between the movie’s stars – Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep – was an openly hostile one. A particularly famous story involving the two concludes with Hoffman going so far as to slap Streep.

Years later, Hoffman stated that his actions can be attributed to his hard-partying, messy divorce, and general inability to get the rough parts of his life together. Streep, meanwhile, was praised for her ability to turn in a brilliant performance despite unenviable conditions.

1. Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis – Some Like It Hot

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>Some Like It Hot 15 Movie Couples Who Actually Despised Each Other

You tend not to hear many bad words about Marilyn Monroe. She was a beloved figure who transcended even film during her time. That doesn’t mean that everyone loved her, though. There were some who simply couldn’t stand working with the starlet.

The most infamous member of that group was Tony Curtis who starred alongside Monroe on Some Like It Hot. Reports suggested that Curtis went so far as to say that kissing Monroe was like kissing Hitler.

Curtis denies that he meant that as anything more than a joke, but he did say that Monroe went out of her way to play everyone against him out of her seeming desire to be the biggest star on set. Curtis also believes that Monroe might have been starting to suffer some mental issues at that time which affected her personality.

Which other on-screen couples were faking their love? Let us know in the comments!
